We are huge fans of urban art, also known as street art or mural art. However, there is often confusion between this and graffiti. Urban art is where the owner of the property has either commissioned the work or given their approval. Graffiti, falls under vandalism laws and is deemed as defacement of public or private property, without permission and is subject to prosecution.
In 2012, Montreal launched the MURAL Festival, which is effectively a celebration of both street art and urban culture. Now in its sixth year, the festival attracts artists and appreciators from all over the world and plays host to over 80 spectacular murals and installations. Photographs can't do justice to the sheer size and detail in these works.
